Amity warned me … she warned all of us that this story was going to be dark, foolish me underestimated how dark it was going to be.
If you think you are getting the hello kitty version of a hitman or the pleasant ‘have a conscience hitman’ – you will find no joy here.
Xavier ‘X’ Blood is brutal, aggressive and he’s a killer. He’s emotionally stunted until Mercy makes him feel again. This opens the gates of confusion for him and he doesn’t know how to deal so he does what he does best. I have never understood how someone can be sexually aroused at such brutality but then again, I’ve not read or known anyone so emotionally disconnected.
Mercy Reid is not who she says she is but she’s on her way to becoming her. Searching for answers and finality of her parent’s murder – she too is emotionally devoid of any stability. Again, Amity hits the mark on creating a strong female lead.
This tale left me cringing, gasping and feeling uncomfortable. The relationship is based on sex. Brutal sex. That’s it. They manipulate each other to serve each other’s purposes. I just don’t know how anything good is going to come of that but trusting Amity, she will be able to make it work. There was nothing for me to relate too but in saying that, it left me open for the experience. What a writer to make someone feel that way and reel them into the story that they cannot put it down. I had to know what happened. I wanted to know how the characters would turn out and she kept me guessing the whole way through.
There was one part where I was thinking ‘oh this is slightly predictable’ and then BAM – out the window that thought goes! I have questions about this story, questions that will obviously be answered in the next book in the series, I just don’t know if I can stomach it.
