I promised myself I’d stay away from dangerous men, but I couldn’t live up to that when Kyle Andrews came back to town. He’s a manipulator, a guy who’ll do whatever it takes to get what he wants, sabotaging anyone who gets in the way. After a fatal fight left him wounded, his UFC career came to a close. He has nothing, but he’s determined to get it all back.
My name is Megan. I’ve known violence, pain, and what it feels like to be scared to live another day. All of that changed the moment I refused to be a victim. Now that my psychotic ex, Alex, can’t find me, I’ve been given a second chance. I owe my life to my friends. The same goes for Kyle. Without him, I wouldn’t be able to feel.
Everyone hates him. But for the life of me I don’t. There’s something about him I can’t ignore. Being with Kyle makes me want it all. However, in loving a hated man, I didn’t know it’d bring the life I fled from back to haunt me. Everywhere I go danger lurks and bad things happen. Kyle believes it’s because of him, but I’m starting to think otherwise. I think Alex has found me, and if so, this time he’s not going to let me go.
Ms Dover had a tall order to fill to make me give a crappola about Kyle. He is a bad person. He didn’t have a redeemable feature on him – much like Camden but Dover made me like him – so I was keen to see if she could do it again.
To be fair, he’s not my favourite character but I dare say this might be my favourite book of the series. This book has everything I love … Love, lust, suspense, action, strong women roles, Alpha men and a happy ending (for some!) – demons from both Megan and Kyle’s past are haunting them but together they are a formidable support system.
The reason why I love this book is for Megan. Dover has written the kind of heroine I love to read. She’s tough, she’s capable and she’s determined. I love how the kind of past she is running from is exactly the person Kyle used to be. Aggressive, domineering and hurtful. She’s worked hard to change her situation and is determined to never be caught in a relationship like that again.
Moving onto Kyle. He sure has changed. It’s like he’s had a personality transplant while recovering. My only criticism of this book is that I wanted to know more about Kyle’s recovery. When we last saw him, Kasey was walking away from a bedridden and practically crippled Kyle. Kyle still has confidence but it’s a different kind and he’s set on making amends. I truly don’t know if I could forgive him for the things he did. I know if I knew him in real life, he wouldn’t be afforded the opportunity. Kyle knows he has done wrong. He is trying hard to distance himself from the persona that everyone else has known.
One thing that should be mentioned is this book might also act as a trigger to some readers as there are a number of domestic violence scenes. Dover certainly has the knack for writing complex characters and intriguing storylines. The characters flow around each other seamlessly and I could feel the seething coming off the pages from the supporting characters in this book who have had run ins with the former Kyle.
This is a great series and I’m looking forward to reading the next in the series.
