Can a secret crush . . .
Jo Walsh has loved Cameron Mitchell for as long as she can remember. Whether front and center in her life or on the periphery, the tall, brooding artist has made his presence seductively and irresistibly known. But whenever they start to get close, Cam pulls away. Jo’s tired of keeping her feelings in a box Cam is afraid to open. If he wants her, he’ll have to prove it. And if he doesn’t, Jo will need to know the real reason why . . .
. . . become the love of a lifetime?
How do you walk away from your soul mate? Cam wishes he knew. No matter how far he runs from Jo, he can’t resist looking back at the silver eyes that seem to see right through him. But as well as Jo thinks she understands Cam, the dark truth about his past is something she shouldn’t have to handle. Cam’s sure that setting Jo free is the right thing to do. Too bad his heart has other ideas . . .
I have been patiently waiting for book three in The Bennett’s series and I will declare this right now, this is possibly my favourite book out of the series and I LOVE this series. Who would have thought that Cameron – the one I hate with a fiery passion – would be the reason I love this book so much.
The book packs so many punches and I hope that I’m right when I say what I do throughout this review.
Cameron and I did not get off to the best of starts with his portrayal in either book that precedes this one. He was beige and an ass. He was unstable and left many casualties in his wake. Each character has their qualities about them but I felt rage and hate towards Cameron like no other character. Don’t get me wrong, he’s still an ass, but when I learned of his history, I can understand why he is the way he is. This doesn’t give him licence to be this way but I admit, I judged him … and harshly. His character is perfectly written to bring such ire from me. Kudos Kennedy.
I love the witty dialogue in this book and I was in fits of laughter. Jo “Do I need a compass?” Cameron “shit sunshine?” – I had tears and this book is full of the fun and funny banter. But, like life, it’s not all sunshine and roses; this story is also about painful growth and honesty.
I also saw this story as a second chance at love. Although Cameron might have loved Kerris, he didn’t love her the way he loves Jo. He finally sees himself as worthy and valid to have Jo be his partner. I can understand his fears but that’s what’s holding him back.
Since book one, even with the snippets of her personality, I have hoped that Jo would end up with someone who is her equal. Someone who makes her happy, someone she can share her deepest and darkest thoughts and not be judged. Cameron was obviously in dire need of that too. I was even yelling at the book ‘don’t keep your hopes on him – he will hurt you!’
Learning of Cameron’s history though and his behaviour still didn’t win him any favours from me. His repeated disappointment towards Jo left me heartbroken for her. Jo is strong and I love strong feminie characters. She has compassion but won’t tolerate BS. She’s tough but only when needed. She calls a spade a spade and after 19 years of loving a man who behaved like he didn’t even see her. Her only failing is loving a man who constantly disappoints her.
The tension oozes off the pages and I devoured it in one sitting. Kennedy’s creation of characters with so much depth and complexity that it’s hard not to fall for the characters and feel what they feel. The standout for me is the way they behave when Cameron finally gives into his hesitation and they go on dates. The rollerskating, the lake – they would have gone 19 years ago and I love how they were written in. (at least that’s the way I interpreted it!)
I know good things must come to an end but that still doesn’t stop me from wanting this to never end. I loved how the main characters are now sub-characters in this book but able to get updates on their lives. This series is a hard one. It will push your own boundaries and beliefs and make you feel like you have been through the ringer. Kennedy you have a true gift – you are an instant buy and I look forward to reading your future works.
